Trump targets $2B for Chicago transit in shutdown pressure campaign

The administration wants to make sure the infrastructure project doesn’t run afoul of the Transportation Department’s regulation meant to bar minority contracting preferences.

The Trump administration said it’s delaying $2.1 billion funding for transit projects in Chicago, and blaming it on congressional Democrats and the government shutdown.

Russ Vought, who leads the White House Office of Management and Budget, announced the move Friday on X, and the Transportation Department followed up with a statement.

DOT was reviewing Chicago’s Red Line extension and modernization on the Red and Purple lines to make sure they comply with the department’s new regulation that prevents minority contracting preferences, the statement said.

But the department staff doing the review have been furloughed because of the shutdown.
