The White House is adding to its prestige council that advises the Biden administration on one of its top priorities — aiding marginalized communities that have long struggled with pollution.
President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that he will appoint 12 more members to the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council. The group, created by an executive order Biden signed in his first days as president, advises the administration on how to right historic wrongs for neighborhoods often left to suffer next to waste dumps and industrial sites.
It is part of a wider effort by Biden and other agencies, such as EPA and the White House Council on Environmental Quality, to embed the pursuit of environmental justice throughout the federal government. Biden is expected to tout his green agenda as he faces off against former President Donald Trump in his 2024 reelection bid.
CEQ Chair Brenda Mallory said in a statement the new members bring “a wealth of experience and expertise” that will help the administration ensure every American has access to a clean and healthy environment.
