Third Way said a moratorium on data center construction is “understandable” though “misguided.”

Democrats should embrace data center growth while also accounting for their hunger for energy, centrist advocacy group Third Way said in a memo Wednesday.

The memo comes as lawmakers in both parties deal with a shifting policy and political landscape surrounding data centers as the nation heads into the midterm elections, where affordability issues and higher electricity prices are central.

“It’s a real mushy moment where public opinion can be shaped, and policymakers have the opportunity to satisfy these really visceral concerns that individuals have about the impact of data centers on their energy costs if they can get it right,” said Emily Becker, director of communications at Third Way.

The center-left think tank did not list a specific party in the memo but said the policy and messaging recommendations were “absolutely” targeted at moderate Democrats.
