The House approved legislation Wednesday to restructure the Coast Guard and authorize its operations, after lawmakers yanked a provision related to offshore energy.
The “Coast Guard Authorization Act,” H.R. 4275, would establish a secretary for the service and would enact stronger protections for members against sexual assault.
“The men and women who serve in the Coast Guard carry out heroic acts each and every day,” said Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), the bill’s sponsor. “And it’s our responsibility to make sure that they have the resources that they need to carry out their missions.”
Absent from the bill was contentious language to create new requirements for crews involved in offshore wind and oil development.
