Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has completed an overhaul of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, appointing three new members to the state body tasked with setting electricity and gas rates.

The Republican governor on Friday appointed GOP state Sen. Andy Zay as IURC chair, as well as former Democratic state Sen. Bob Deig and longtime consumer advocate Anthony Swinger as commissioners. The trio will fill out a five-member commission, joining David Veleta and David Ziegner, appointees of former Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb.

The overhaul comes three months after Braun said Hoosiers were overburdened by rising utility bills and that utility shareholders should “bear more of the cost of doing business.”

“Hoosiers deserve reliable and affordable utilities and have been burdened by excessive and unnecessary utility rate increases for too long,” Braun said in a statement announcing the appointments. He said the new commissioners will “ensure that Indiana has exceptional utilities without saddling families and businesses with excessive prices.”
