Texas power CEO on ‘Mr. Large Load,’ PJM and 20-year contracts

HOUSTON — The incoming CEO at NRG Energy said he’s glad to be operating in a “get-stuff-done” state, even if it’s unclear how a massive push to build data centers will play out.

Robert Gaudette, who is slated to become chief executive at NRG on April 30, said the energy industry sees opportunities for new power generation in Texas — especially given the market setup compared with other regions.

That’s why you see the big announcements down here,” he said in an interview. “It’s why you see data centers coming and why you’ll see more in the future.”

Houston-based NRG is one of the biggest power producers and retailers in Texas, including so-called thermal power plants fueled by natural gas and coal. It operates in the region managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, whose region handles most of the power demand in the state.
